What is Freshcare?

Freshcare is the fresh produce industry’s own on-farm assurance program, meeting the needs of Australian growers in fulfilling both domestic and international market requirements. Freshcare’s practical approach to helping growers and packers assure customers that their produce is safe to eat and sustainably grown has seen thousands of fresh produce businesses adopt the Freshcare program since its launch in July 2000.

Freshcare is Australia’s largest on-farm assurance program and exciting new developments, including benchmarking to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), will ensure the program continues to grow. It is widely accepted as a practical, industry focused, food safety program. However, Freshcare is not just about food safety and quality. The Freshcare Environmental, Environmental Viticulture and Environmental Winery Codes are also being widely adopted, providing an independent assurance of on-farm environmental practices and sustainable production

Who accepts the Freshcare Standard?

The major retailers (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Metcash and Costco) accept the Freshcare standard.
Sci Qual International is an approved certification body for some of the major retailers as outlined here.

Accredited Certification

The Freshcare Food Safety & Quality Standard has recently been approved as an accredited standard by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ).

This change from a private industry scheme, to a more widely available accredited standard, will ensure Freshcare remains a widely accepted food safety certification, for both domestic and export markets.

As an accredited standard, Freshcare can now complete the long-discussed Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmark process.

Sci Qual International is the first certification body to achieve JAS-ANZ accreditation for the Freshcare Program.
